Operation 513 - Preacher Restrains Heckler

Josh Williamson May 9th, 2008

Saturday, 3 May, 2008

I was still rather excited about the conversion of my niece as I made my way to the city. Another cool thing about tonight was that we had a few new people come out on the streets. It is always encouraging to see new people come out to share the gospel.

Tonight was also a night in which we got to field test our new Operation 513 tracts, and it soon became clear that they all were going to be a great success. After we set up the Bible table, and got the team ready for the first open air, the thought struck me just how fortunate we are to have the freedom in Australia to declare the gospel of Christ. Even though over the past few months there have been multiple reports of preachers being arrested nationwide, we still had the freedom in Brisbane to preach, and we also have good relations with the fine men and women of the Queensland Police.

Ralph was the first preacher up for the night, and it soon became clear that it was going to be a long slow night. Ralph is coming along really well in his training to be a preacher, he has good voice projection, but the only thing he needs to realise that hecklers will try to keep him quiet. But the skill of handling hecklers only comes with experience. Ralph preached for near about thirty minutes, and during this time only a few people stopped to listen. Some people and ministries would be disappointed with the fact that a large crowd did not gather, but we were thankful that God allowed us to share the gospel with at least one soul.

At the start of the night I sent a four man team under the leadership of Dan Kent down to a busy intersection to hand out tracts, but after an hour of them being away I had to send someone to go fetch them back, as many people were stopping at the Bible table asking questions. Many great one to ones occurred during this time, it was encouraging to see so many people interested in learning more about the claims of Jesus Christ.

After a while I began to preach, and not long into my preaching a few hecklers arrived. The problem was that these guys were bad hecklers, one of them who was drunk was cursing and claiming to be a Christian. So I rebuked him for his hypocrisy, and pointed out that he was not a Christian. This began to get the crowd fired up, and a few people began to throw out questions like “What about paedophiles?” “What about those preachers that want your money!” “What about evolution?” I did my best to answer all these questions from the Bible, and I must say it was good to see “Mr. Dawkins Man” back even though he was sick.

There was one man who kept standing right up in my face screaming and cursing. Multiple times I told him to step back and stop touching me. He refused, and eventually Hsusy began to distract him. Unfortunately the man decided to continue to stand right in front of me and yell at Andrew. The crowd went from listening to me to listening to this demonic drunk man yell. A few people formed up on my right and began to ask questions, so I did my best to answer them. This was done more in a one to one setting, but before I realised it a crowd and stopped to listen. By now the crazed yelling man had gone, so I began to address the crowd. One asked about the Roman Catholic priests that molest children. I answered his questions, but while I was talking to him the police came and took him away for fighting earlier in the night.

While the police were there the crazed yelling man returned. He was calm while the police were there, then as they left he watched them walk down the mall. As soon as he thought they were far enough away he swung at me and slapped me across the face. Before he had a chance to respond I put my arm out to block any future shots, and also to restrain him. The police which were a fair way down the mall heard the sound of the slap so they came running back to arrest the man. While this was happening I was thinking “What a waste of time, the open air just got wrecked!” But God used this to open up some of those in the crowds with hard hearts. Some were shocked that we kept on witnessing even though I was assaulted, this led to many great one to ones. Many of those witnessed to took Bibles after that.

The rest of the night was spent in one to ones and tract work.

Praise God that He is in full control!

Soli Deo Gloria!

Fresh Fire or False Fire?

Jeff Fuller May 7th, 2008

I was recently told of a series of revival meetings taking place in Lakeland, Florida led by a guy named Todd Bentley. Coming from a pentecostal background, and believing in the continuation of gifts, I found it interesting to look over this man’s recent sermons to see what he is teaching. I’ve seen a lot of charismania in my lifetime so I wasn’t surprised by what I read in the transcripts of his weekly teachings.

Let me give you a little background. I was impacted years ago, and first introduced to this kind of intimacy, through the ministries of Benny Hinn and Kathryn Kuhlman. They opened the way for me to go beyond the power of God’s Spirit, the gifts or any kind of experience like the baptism of the Holy Spirit. As I look back, I can see that the person or presence of the Holy Spirit has become as real to me today as any man or woman would be anywhere I go. In fact, there are times when His presence is so real it’s as if a person is hovering over my shoulder. Or other times I’ll be walking along and I’ll sense His presence moving with me. I can feel it.

Now I want to ask you several questions. What goes through your mind when you think of the Holy Spirit? When you see somebody shake and fall down under the power, or when someone speaks in tongues, do you think, there’s the Holy Spirit!? Or when you see a gift of the Spirit, do you call it the Holy Spirit?

Actually, what you are seeing is the effect of the Spirit. But who is the Holy Spirit? I’m not talking about what He does—the Counselor or the Teacher. Who is He? Do you know what He feels? Do you know when He’s hurt? Do you know the emotions of the Holy Spirit? How much of the manifest presence of God’s Spirit do you know in your life?

For example, I know Him like I know my wife. There are times when my wife will just look at me and I’ll know what she is thinking. It’s like when you are in such close relationship with someone and you’re in their presence, you just know. Nothing is even said, you just know. So, how close are you?

Some of us think we have a relationship with the Holy Spirit; we can think of all the supporting scriptures and we invite the Holy Spirit to help us serve the Lord Jesus. We’re comfortable with the Father, we worship Jesus, and we pray to the Father in the name of Jesus. But there’s more.

The first paragraph of this man’s sermon tells me that this man is teaching a dangerous kind of intimacy, “They opened the way for me to go beyond the power of God’s Spirit….” Go BEYOND the power of God’s Spirit?!?! Wow, that’s a bold claim!

Sam Storms warns that “the pursuit of intimacy has often led people into unbiblical and dangerous waters and the possibility of drowning in a sea of subjectivity is very real.” Dr. Storms identifies 7 mistakes people make in their pursuit of intimacy with God, where men stray from the fact that we must pursue God within the parameters set forth in Scripture:

  1. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to allow our familiarity to degenerate into flippancy.
  2. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to fail to remember His transcendence by placing extreme emphasis on His immanence.
  3. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to lose sight of His holiness.
  4. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to overemphasize the subjective fruit to the exclusion of the objective foundation.
  5. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to fail to come to Him on His terms.
  6. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to lose sight of the distinction between Creator and creature.
  7. It is possible, in our pursuit of intimacy with God, to presume upon His grace.

It’s easy to see from Bentley’s own testimony that he has blurred the lines between God and man, speaking of the Spirit of God in a way that makes Him seem more of a buddy than a person of the Godhead. And he’s teaching outside the parameters of Scripture, though he briefly quotes singular passages throughout his sermons. I would call his focus that of radical application. What I mean is that his ministry is all about the application of Scriptures, leaving those who he is teaching without the context of what the Scriptures are actually saying to who the letters were actually written. Without that important foundation of context, there is no way for his congregation to know if the application he is teaching is credible.

For example, look at this reference from Ephesians Chapter 1 followed by Bentley’s application. Does he give enough of Ephesians to his congregation so that they can see that the text God has authored supports Bentley’s application?

Just look at what the Apostle Paul said in his prayer to the Ephesian church about our inheritance: “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Eph. 1:11). He goes on to describe three aspects in our inheritance: that we may know one, what is the hope of His calling; two, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints; and three, what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places (vv. 1:17–20, emphasis mine).

So, I’m not just focused on who I am in Christ, I’m focused on discovering who Christ is in me. In that discovery, I’m being drawn into a deep friendship with God in the secret place. That’s where I’m finding out more and more about the scope of my inheritance—for instance, reigning and resurrection power, and more. Conversely, if I was continually ignoring the Holy Spirit, even though I am born again and God’s word says I can enter the kingdom of God, I would not be in the right position to receive all of my inheritance.

Think about this. We can enter the kingdom of God, yes, but not everyone that enters the kingdom of God inherits the kingdom of God! The key to inheritance is intimacy and revelation and through this I know that, spiritually, I’ve been made a “king”. This is my spiritual status, to reign on this earth—and so I’m beginning to reign today! But, of course, without intimacy with God, I won’t have the reigning and resurrection power!

What’s more, what we gain as we advance and grow here, we take with us into eternity. Don’t miss this. The degree to which we faithfully act on the revelation God gives us, is the degree of responsibility that we will have in eternity. There are degrees; and this will affect our “brightness” in heaven. Every “star” differs in glory. We’re mistaken if we think that if we all ended up in heaven right now, we’d be equals; that somehow once we enter the pearly gates everything that I see, you see; and everything that becomes my experience, becomes your experience. Or that whatever we’ve done here doesn’t count.

I, for one, want to get to know God; I want to rule and reign in the universe and hang out with the angels. “God, can you create another planet with souls on it that need to be saved and send me there?” I want to talk about different things with Michael (archangel) and Gabriel (angel). “Come on Abraham! We’ve got to have a conversation about . . .” Heaven would be pretty boring if we just kind of showed up and said, “Here I am! Done!”

If you go to the text of Ephesians 1 you’ll find that Bentley’s application of the Scripture is skewed far from what Paul is communicating to the people of God. From reading several sermons, this is a trend. He’s clearly making this stuff up. If you don’t know the Bible, he isn’t giving it to you, so when you leave the meeting you are leaving with all this application that is just made up stuff with little to no biblical support. The snowball just gets bigger and bigger the more it rolls down the hill!

Restoring Zimbabwe

Jeff Fuller May 6th, 2008

Zimbabwe is at a crossroads. What was once a bread basket of Africa, exporting food, became a basket case, with millions facing starvation. 28 years of misrule by Marxist Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF resulted in the highest inflation (over 500,000%) and the lowest life expectancy in the world (34 years for women).

How does one begin to rebuild a country that has been so thoroughly ruined?

This is the challenge that we as Christians must respond to. It is imperative that Christians worldwide unite in prayer and action - to ensure that the long-suffering people of Zimbabwe are freed from the tyranny which has oppressed them for so long.

A Time for Prayer and Action

This is the time of great urgency when we need to mobilize our congregations to earnestly intercede for the Christians who are suffering in Zimbabwe. Civilians have been beaten in the streets and advocates in their chambers. Pastors have been imprisoned for “subversive prayers.” Church buildings have been raided by police and bulldozed down, and the Anglican cathedral in Harare desecrated by Mugabe’s priest and followers. Mugabe’s police have assaulted and arrested members of parliament and independent election observers.

We need to contact our elected representatives to urge decisive action to ensure that the lawless ZANU-PF regime of Robert Mugabe relinquishes office and is replaced with the democratically elected legitimate government of President Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change. A de facto military coup is seeking to keep the newly elected government from office and perpetuate the disgraceful dictatorship of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF.

Considering that Mugabe and his Marxists came to power through violence and deception, it is not surprising that he is endeavoured to stay in power through the same means.

We need to write letters to our leaders urging them to support the Zimbabwean people in their struggle for freedom and justice. Write letters to the editor of your favourite newspaper or magazine to encourage others to help our brethren in Zimbabwe.

Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us that we ought always to pray and not give up. In the Parable of the Persistant Widow the Lord taught us that even an unjust judge will do what is right in response to persistant prayer and pressure (Luke 18:1-7).

We need to pray and act now to ensure that the Zimbabweans attain the freedom that they have been praying and working for these many years. Then we need to be prepared to support them in rebuilding their country on Biblical principles.

Restoration

Of the highest priority will be to lay solid Biblical foundations for the new nation. Mugabe’s Marxist regime destroyed the Rule of Law and devastated the economy. One first priority for the new government of Zimbabwe will be to restore respect for life and property and for the Rule of Law. We would recommend that the very first act of the new administration would be to call for a National Day of Repentance and Prayer, just as Zambia’s MMD did in 1991.

A Turning Point in History

The situation we are facing in Zimbabwe today is similar to that in Eastern Europe in 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down and communist dictator Nicolai Ceaucescu was shot by his own army, on Christmas Day. My parents-in-law, Rev. Bill and Harriett Bathman, who have spent most of their 55 years in missions serving the persecuted churches in Eastern Europe, and my wife and I travelled into Romania to assist in Leadership Training for the newly liberated country.

Similarly, in 1991 when Kaunda’s socialist UNIP regime was swept from power in Zambia, the new Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) of President Frederick Chiluba came to power declaring it’s commitment to establish Zambia as a Christian country. One of the first acts of President Chiluba was to solemnly call for a National Day of Repentance and Prayer. We had the privilege of going into Zambia and conducting many Biblical Worldview Seminars for teachers, chaplains, pastors, evangelists and government officials as they began the task of rebuilding Zambia on Biblical foundations.

To Heal Zimbabwe

If we want God to heal Zimbabwe, then we need to mobilize God’s people to humble themselves and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14).

President Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC government in Zimbabwe will have the daunting task to restore confidence for investors, farmers and tourists. He can do this by implementing Biblical principles of restorative justice. Restitution to those defrauded and looted by the Marxist ZANU regime, restoration of property to those who were unjustly deprived of their homes and properties, and promoting free enterprise and honest money will help heal the devastated economy of Zimbabwe.

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants…” Leviticus 25:10

Free Market and Honest Money

God gave us the Ten Commandments, not the Ten Suggestions: “Thou shalt not steal” (Exodus 20:15 and “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours goods” (Exodus 20:17) establishes the principles of private ownership of property. Socialism is legalized theft. It is institutionalized envy. And it just doesn’t work. Historically, socialism has produced nothing but poverty and bureaucracy. Socialists are parasites who consume what others have earned by hard work and ingenuity. Instead of nationalisation (which is effectively just theft and clumsy bureaucracy), the Bible advocates privatisation (private ownership and personal responsibility). The Bible commands diligent hard work, honesty and thrift (1 Thes. 4:11; 2 Thes 3:10).

Free enterprise, honest money and the Christian work ethic will go a long way to restoring the economy in Zimbabwe. “Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends up in slave labour.” Proverbs 12:24. The Bible forbids unjust weights and measures/inflation (Leviticus 19:35-36).

The devastating impact of unbacked currency/inflation on pensions and savings is criminal. Biblical Law requires that we use honest scales and honest weights – honest money backed by real constant value (Proverbs 20:10; Micah 6:11-12).

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Chronicles 3:17

The only hope for Zimbabwe is return in repentance to God, rediscover the Biblical agenda and restore Biblical principles into every area of personal and community life, education, economics, public ethics, the judiciary and public policy.

Foundations for Freedom and Prosperity

The foundation for a truly free and prosperous nation can only be layed in characters, minds and lives changed by the Grace of God. Therefore the new government of Zimbabwe must give high priority to the work of Bible-based Evangelical chaplains, in the prisons, in the police and army, and for all in the civil service. In order to be successful, a society needs to be made up of honest citizens who will not steal, diligent people who are hardworking and productive, compassionate families who are concerned for their neighbours, responsible workers who will fulfill their obligations and be faithful stewards of public resources.

“…stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice…” Isaiah 1:16-17

For nations to be strong, the families need to be strong. For governments to be good, their citizens need to be good. Those who cannot control themselves are not capable of ruling over a city (Proverbs 16:32). Those who cannot manage their household well are not qualified to lead others (1 Timothy 3:4-5).

“…see the trouble we are in; Jerusalem is in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.”
Nehemiah 2:17

To Bless Zimbabwe

We want God to bless Zimbabwe, therefore we need to work for a civil administration which:

  • Recognises God as the highest source of authority.
  • Applies Biblical principles as the foundation for all law.
  • Is committed to upholding the right to life of the innocent.
  • Shows love and concern for our neighbours by upholding human dignity, moral standards and private ownership of property.
  • Protects people from the exploitation and abuse of pornography.
  • Effectively deters crime by prompt and appropriate punishment of criminals.
  • Respects parental responsibility for the education of their children and therefore parental authority for the schools, teachers and textbooks.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain who build it…” Psalm 127:1

Checks and Balances

The Bible and history confirm that human nature is basically selfish. Therefore we need a form of government with strict laws and punishment for criminal behaviour. Civil government needs to be powerful enough to restrain the evil impulses of sinful people. However, as “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” rulers cannot be trusted with absolute power either. There needs to be checks and balances. A constitutional republic where Law rules.

Nations need to be built on the unchangeable law of God’s Word. Instead of rulers, we must elect servants – civil servants – bound down with the chains of the constitution. We need to seek to erect a system of checks and balances to divide power and responsibility between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.

All law-abiding and responsible citizens must have the right to obtain, own, carry and use legal firearms to defend life, liberty and property and to prevent violent crime. The right of self-defense must not be infringed on. The national constitution must provide for a true separation of powers with effective checks and balances. The sovereignty of the various provinces must be recognised within a truly decentralised federal state, with most responsibility resting upon provincial and municipal governments, the family, voluntary associations, churches and upon the individual.

Safeguards for Society

To ensure the absolute independence of the judiciary, no members of the judiciary should be appointed by, nor answerable to, the executive or legistlative branches of governments. Members of Parliament and senators must be made directly answerable to their constituency, and not the political party.

Every citizen must have the right to participate in the free market economy based upon the private ownership of property and individual free enterprise. The inalienable right of property must not be impaired. No laws ensuring rights to private ownership of property may, under any circumstances, be suspended. The rights to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief, opinion and to receive and impart information and ideas are inalienable rights which may not be infringed.

Transforming Communities by Changing Lives

Mission teams of Frontline Fellowship are preparing now for conducting Biblical Worldview Seminars, God and Government Seminars and Reformation and Revival Seminars in order to assist Zimbabweans in the reconstruction of their country. By God’s grace Frontline has already reprinted 10,000 copies of the new Biblical Principles for Africa book in preparation for this Leadership Training in Zimbabwe.

Do you want to be part of this nation transforming team? A high priority for the next Great Commission Course (27 June – 18 July) will be to train mission teams for ministry in Zimbabwe.

“Those from among you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, the Restorer of Streets to dwell in.” Isaiah 58:12

Operation 513 - All Quiet on the Brisbane Front

Josh Williamson May 2nd, 2008

Saturday, 26 April, 2008

Tonight was an interesting night. As I prepared for the outreach, I was reminded of last week, and how we had a young man threaten to get some ‘goodies’ to pour over me while I preached. This idea did not really excite me, but as I thought about it, I concluded that the young man probably was just making up some threats.

As Ryan began preaching, I was approached by Kyosti who told me that he had just witnessed to a group of young men, and that I should be aware that one of them has a big jar of honey to pour over me when I preach. As I looked around I spotted the young man from the week before, and I knew it was going to be an interesting night.

The young men walked over to me and we began to chat. I have witnessed to these guys before, and Kyosti just went over them again with the gospel. So as Ryan preached in the background we just chatted about general stuff. I informed that I was aware of what they were planning to do, and that no matter what happens I would not become angry, nor would I hate them. But rather I would continue to share Jesus with them. One of the team softened and was very open to talking. The other two were under the influence of alcohol, so it was hard to talk to them.

We spoke for some time on different topics, and one of the boys turned out to be 13 years old, and the sad thing was he was drunk and could barely stand. Because of their drunkenness they would run up to people and try to scare them. This resulted in the police coming up to see what was going on. I spoke to the Police constable, and explained what was happening, then I asked him to have a word with the 13 year old on the dangers of drinking. The police officer took the boy aside and gave him a good dressing down for drinking and even call his mother. The boys attitude changed after this and they were very polite and friendly.

Ryan was still preaching at this time, he was heading towards the two hour mark when he finally stepped down. All around our section in the Queen street mall one to one’s were occurring. I noticed that our regular heckler “Mr Dawkins” was present so I walked over to him, and had a conversation. We seem to have a good relationship with a lot of our regular hecklers, and one can see that they are softening towards the gospel.

“Mr Dawkins” and I chatted for some time about atheism, and Christianity. We went back and forth over the existence of God, and in the end he admitted that their ‘may’ be a God. I pointed out to him then that he could no longer hold to atheism, but rather he must be an agnostic. We then chatted about how the belief in no god, is just as much a religion as a belief in God. “Mr Dawkins” didn’t like that two much, and as we parted ways he said he would talk about this more. So no doubt we will see him again this coming week, even though he keeps saying he hates listening to us.

By now it was midnight, so we started to pack up. I was quite impressed, the night was quiet, yet many great one to ones occurred. Then as we were preparing to leave a man claiming to be a pastor was getting violent. He was drunk, and trying to beat up a teenager who was listening to him being witnessed to. Myself and couple of the guys jumped in the middle, and tried to keep them apart, but the ‘pastor’ kept pushing past. Eventually we were able to separate them, and the drunk ‘pastor’ was getting hostile towards me, his face was familiar, and I thought I had seen him somewhere before, so I asked him if he was related to a certain family that has a lot of pastors in the AOG movement. As I said the name of the family his face changed, and he couldn’t get away quick enough.

It is sad to see so many false converts out there saying their Christians, when in reality they are still lost.

Praise God for His Gospel Truth!

Soli Deo Gloria!
